Members of the Star Trek Fan Community say: "Donald Trump is Not Who We Are"

As a member of the Star Trek Fan Community community, I invite all members to stand together against the racial, religious, and other intolerances that Donald Trump’s policies and rhetoric promotes. It is putting Latinx, Muslim-American, LGBTQIA+, those with disabilities, and other community members directly at risk.

There is no place for this kind of discrimination in the Star Trek Fan Community or in America. There is no place in the Star Trek community for Donald Trump.

Why is this important?

Star Trek tells the story of a future full of diversity, equality, and prosperity. It's one of the most forward-thinking franchises in television and film history, thanks in large part to the philosophy of creator Gene Roddenberry. The series became a hit for its adventurous space exploration stories, but what really kept fans engaged was its utopian optimism: the notion that the intolerance we face in our everyday world would someday be a thing of the past.

Star Trek gives us a society where race, gender, sexuality, and economic status are non-issues. We see America as part of one United Earth where borders and walls do not exist. We share our resources and knowledge, and an emphasis is placed on exploration and discovery over militarization and profit. We are told there is infinite diversity in infinite combinations, and that diversity should always be celebrated.

We are shown a future we very well could have, but only if we take the steps necessary to build it. Star Trek's future came after a war that nearly decimated the human race and planet Earth, but we can work together to build that future for ourselves without violence. The only way we can do that is by voting for candidates who can reflect these values in office.

Many of the visionaries behind Star Trek have made their stance clear: Donald Trump stands in complete opposition to the ideals of the Star Trek universe. The recently launched Trek Against Trump campaign holds endorsements from cast, crew, and writers of every iteration of the Star Trek franchise, and the list grows longer everyday. The campaign explicitly denounces Trump and his ideologies as anti-Star Trek:

"Star Trek has always offered a positive vision of the future, a vision of hope and optimism, and most importantly, a vision of inclusion, where people of all races are accorded equal respect and dignity, where individual beliefs and lifestyles are respected so long as they pose no threat to others. We cannot turn our backs on what is happening in the upcoming election. Never has there been a presidential candidate who stands in such complete opposition to the ideals of the Star Trek universe as Donald Trump."

It's time for us as fans to join them in saying that we demand better. You can learn more about Trek Against Trump by visiting their Facebook page:
